Greenland

Greenland - List of Champions

The first federation to organise a national football championship in Greenland was the GIF (Grønlands Idrætsforbund), a general sports federation (not restricted to football) founded on 3 September 1953 at a meeting attended by representatives of the following 11 clubs: K'ingmeĸ (Upernavik), Malamuk (Úmanaĸ), Nanoĸ (K'utdligssat), K'SP (Godhavn/K'eĸertarssuaĸ), Kugsak (Christianshåb/K'asigiánguit), T-41 (Egedesminde/Ausiait), SAK (Holsteinsborg/Sisimiut), Kâgssagssuk (Sukkertoppen/Manîtsoĸ), Nûk (Godthåb/Nûk), Nagtoralik (Frederikshåb/Pâmiut) and Kigssaviarssuk (Julianehåb/K'aĸortoĸ).
It first organised a football championship in 1954/55 and continued to organise the event until 1970, usually announced as FodboldturneringenGrønlandturneringen or Fodboldmesterskab i Grønland. Only since the late sixties it was possible to organise the competition annually; before it was held only once every three years or so, with a single tournament sometimes lasting a year and a half.
On 4 July 1971 a football specific federation, the GBU (Grønlands Boldspil-Union), was founded, which took over the organisation of the tournament.
