1968/69
International tournament held in 1968-1969. Participants were those clubs that had won the
Intercontinental Cup until 1967: Peñarol (Uruguay), Santos (Brazil) and Racing Club (Argentina)
for South America; Internazionale (Italy) and Real Madrid (Spain) for Europe.
Teams were subdivided into two groups, the winners of which qualified for the final.
The South American group was won by Santos, while Real Madrid, initially registered in the
European group, withdrew afterwards, giving Internazionale a walkover to the final.
The decisive match was held in Milan on June 24, 1969. Santos beat Inter thanks to a goal
by Toninho Guerreiro; the second leg, initially scheduled for September, was never held.
Santos won the trophy; CONMEBOL decided to officially recognise the competition in 2005.
UEFA, on the other hand, doesn't regard the tournament as official.
