Madeira - List of Champions
The first organised game of football took place in 1875 in Camacha, organised by Madeira born Harry Hinton (it was the first organised football match anywhere in Portugal). As of 2009, there are 43 clubs on Madeira Island and 2 clubs on Porto Santo Island. Clubs from the islands could not enter the Portuguese league until 1973, playing only in the island championship (they could enter the Portuguese cup though). In 1973, the Madeira champions, CS Marítimo, were allowed to enter a playoff with the worst teams of the second and the best of the third mainland levels. They were successful, entered the national league structure in 1974 (as the first insular team to do so) and earned their first ever promotion to the national top level in 1977; they haven't been out of the top level since 1985. In 1988 Nacional made their debut in the Portuguese top flight, followed by União in 1989. In 1989/90 and 1990/91 three Madeira clubs were part of the top level in Portugal.

The first edition of the Madeira championhip in 1916/17 was reportedly contested by 4 clubs with Marítimo emerging winners after winning all their (reportedly) 4 matches (which makes no sense if a league format was used).
